William Knapp(Brennan/McNally) obit 1936-2005

William F. (Bill) Knapp passed away on April 13, 2005. He was born on August 26, 1936, in Newark, NJ. While serving in the Army as a radar operator he met and married Betty Garan in 1962. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1968 with a degree in psychology and in 1986 received his master's in environmental planning from California State University, Northridge. He was also a member of MENSA.

In 1968 Bill and his family moved to California's San Fernando Valley. He worked for the City of Los Angeles' Department of Sanitation as a junior administrative assistant, a supervisor and then as manager of refuse collection & disposal division until his retirement in 1992. He resided in Escondido and Fallbrook and moved to Bonsall in 2004.

After his retirement, he was an independent solid waste consultant and a columnist and contributing editor of World Waste magazine. A former SWANA chapter president, Bill served as a commissioner on the Environmental Advisory Board of Escondido and was a frequent speaker on solid waste operations and management nationwide. Bill was an avid reader and enjoyed writing poetry and stories. He loved animals and nature and loved storytelling, especially to his grandson, Troy.

Bill is survived by his wife, Betty of Bonsall; daughters Cynthia Rice of Bonsall, CA and Cherly Johnston of Poway, CA; grandson Troy Rice; sisters Marilyn(Victor) Hamilton, Virginia and Jean; brothers Robert and Edward; foster daughter Laura Eskilson; a large extended family in Elizabeth, New Jersey and numerous others who were special to him. He is predeceased by his brother Ronald Knapp, mother Eleanor McGrath Knapp and father William Francis Knapp Sr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Animals, 777 Post Road, Ste. 205, Darien, CT 06802, wwwfriendsofanimals.org, or other organizations dedicated to the welfare of animals.
