I don't have access to the 1850 census, but if you are looking to work on Caroline Foss's ancestry, and you can find a place to access the census, look for Foss families in the area they were married or the area where Asa came from.
Here's the census info I can find on their daughter Carrie:
1900, 2nd ward, Bayonne, Hudson Co., NJ
Erickson, Osmond b. Apr. 1874 in NJ age 26, married 3 yrs, occ engineer
wife Carrie b. May 1874 in NJ age 26, 2 children born, 2 living
son Asa b. July 1878 in NJ age 1
dau Grace(?) b. Feb 1900 in NJ age 3/12
I think Osmond is Lawrence going by a variation of his middle name.
1910, 5th ward, Bayonne, Hudson Co, NJ:
Erickson, Laurence age 36, married 12 yrs occ Engineer
wife Carrie age 35, 3 children born, 3 living
son Asa age 12
dau Grace age 10
dau Carrie age 8
1920, 3rd ward, Bayonne, Hudson Co, NJ:
Erickson, Lawrence age 46 occ engineer/pencil company
wife Carrie age 45
dau Carrie age 10 (that's what it looks like)
also in 1920, 3rd ward, Bayonne:
Erickson, Asa age 21 occ welder?/railroad
wife Hilda age 23 b. NY, both parents b. Sweden
