"The second old paper quoted by Dr. Logan read:"Dec 20, 1785.Sir:You will warn the undernamed persons to work on the road leading from Ninety Six to Col George Reed's mill on Long Cane, You will warn them to meet at Richard Norrel's near John Logan'smill on Friday, the 23rd inst., and come in order to work two days with axes and hoes and all thier male negroes."Names of the early settlers who were to work two days, including Christmas Eve, 1785,follow:"Godfred Isbull, William McMachin,........
......Richard Norrel............
John Logan's mill was located on Wilson's Creek, east of Greenwood.
page 311-312
........paid high tribute to the religious zeal of Mrs. McKellar and said she was a power in the Met. Society of her community. This Mrs. McKellar was undoubtedly the widow of John McKellar, Jr., the former Cambridge postmaster and nephew of Donald McKellar. Her name, according to family belief, was Nancy Norrell, and she may have been a daughter of Richard Norrell who was living east of Greenwood by 1785 as he was named then in connection with work on the Long Cane road from Cambridge."
hope this helps,
the Richard Norrel mentioned is suppose to be the father
of Joseph Norrell who is the father of John E. Norrell on the 1850 census,
John E. Norrell, married Jane Hughes who is the sister to my great grandfather, William Harrison "Duck" Hughes.
They are children of Joel "Joe" Hughes and his wife
Martha Jane "Patsy" Wells who lived in the Scuffletown Road
community in the 1800's this area is now known as the Turkey Creek area. The house that Duck Hughes lived in and all his children wereborn in fell down a couple yrs ago.
Fortunately I took a photo of it before it fell.
all his children were born in the back "birthing room" ,
my paternal grandmother, Lou Della Hughes was born there in 1872, one of the oldest of his children. It is possible that Joe Hughes and Patsy lived in the house first.
It is only a couple miles from the Turkey Creek Church and the remains of the house were not cleared away the last time I was there.
I do not know where Joel and Patsy Hughes are buried, but "Duck" Hughes is buried at Turkey Creek, so maybe there are unmarked graves there for them,as there are numerous field stones.
Duck was born around 1850. (dont have notes out)
According to my father, Jane Hughes Norrell nursed John E. Norrell when he was wounded in the war, Jane and William Harrison Hughes had brothers, Chesley, Rap, George and Hense and a sister Susan,
either Susan's husband or Jane's commited suicide and are not buried with the wife at Turkey Creek, will have to check my notes later on that.Believe it is Jane's husband.
so that would be why I read tonight where a relative could not find the tombstone for John .I will check and report back where the husband is buried.
hope this helps Norrell/Hughes researches.
