Lt James Nunn 1753 to 1836
I am researching the Irish branch of the Nunn family and haave come up against a brick wall where Lt. James Nunn is concerned. I cannot find out whichof the Irish families he came from What I do know is as follows:
1. Joined the 57th regiment towards the end of the American War of Independence.
2. After the Treaty the Regiment moved to Halifax Nova Scotia for 8 years. While there he married Elizabeth Winniett, daughter of a senior judge from Annapolis Royal and the couple had 3 sons and 3 daughters, namely James Winniett, Loftus, John Oliver Howe, Mary Anne, Martha and Madeline Margaret.
3. In 1791 the Regimnent returned to England. James Nunn was promoted to Lt.in the 57th Reg in 1794 and Adjutant in September 1795 of the Royal Garrison Battalion.
4. He died in 1836 at the age of 84 and is buried at the Royal Garrison Church, Southsea, in Portsmouth.
5. His son James Winniett was notoriously connected to the massacre of aboriginees in Australia in 1834.He died in Meerut India in 1847. His two other sons both died in Northern Ireland where they are buried, near Newry County Down.
Can anyone out there assist me in identifying the parentage of Lt. James Nunn.
Any help whatsoever will be greatly appreciated.
