Don......

My g.g. uncle settled near Battle Mountain in the late 1860's. He was born Matthias Schmitz in Germany, but when he settled in Nevada he changed his last name to Schmith. I would like to know why he changed his name and what brought him to Nevada. The rest of his family settled in Wisconsin. His son, also named Matthias had a huge cattle ranch between Battle Mountain and Austin, they later moved the operation to Truckee Meadow near Reno. He has survivors living in the Reno area, but have had no luck contacting them. Thanks, Arleta
