New York State original marriage records since 1881 have been archived in Albany (see http://www.nyhealth.gov/vital_records ). Duplicate records are maintained in the offices of town and city clerks that have issued the licenses. Any of these offices can issue a license for marriage at any location within New York State. That is, a newspaper report of a marriage in a specific community does not necessarily mean that the license application is archived in that community.
