Hej Henrik,

I do not live in Chautauqua County or even close to it (I live in Illinois.) but I have a branch of my family who lived there and who were born in Sweden. There is good information for this area but much is not online. I hope the people who do live in this area can help you out.

For example, I found wonderful information in Lakeview Cemetery records, where a lot of my Swedes lived. (Those are microfilmed and can be ordered from a Family History Center but perhaps a local person can check for you.) I found much good information in records of the Swedish American churches, which are also microfilmed. I found good information in marriage application records, but those are also on microfilm. There are state cenuses (for example, 1905, 1915, 1925) that may or may not be online. There are Swedish American newspapers which also can be helpful. There are city directories which could list your Gottfrid and maybe those could help narrow down the time period in which he might have died or left the area.

The Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center has a lot of wonderful materials (among them, Swedish American church records and newspapers but also more) but those are NOT online. I know that the same records are also available in Sweden but I can't remember where in Sweden, unfortunately. Perhaps the Swenson Center can tell you.

There is a person who sometimes helps out with an unpublished database of members of Swedish American churches and newspapers. He works for a Swedish archive, I think, and he once in a while posts on the Sweden forum. (Type Sweden into the "Jump to Forum" space at the top right of this page.) I don't think that database is complete. I think that it is still being developed but perhaps you will have good luck.

I don't see anyone who could be your missing ancestor in the 1920 and later censuses. Maybe he died before then.

The Holmback family is listed on Ancestry.com for the 1910 U.S. Federal Census. The transcriber misread some names, most noticeably the boy's name.

Their address was 91 Morse Avenue. The father was a foreman of a furniture factory. (I think there was at least one furniture factory in Jamestown. I have seen the furniture factory mentioned a few times in censuses for my relatives.)

If you ever find a date (month and year) of death for Gottfrid, the following library does obituary lookups, for a small fee. This is something that perhaps a person who lives locally can also help with. I don't know if there are death indexes in genealogical societies for Chautauqua County.

Lycka till!

Med vänlig hälsning,

Judy
