Rachel Smith was my 3th great grand-aunt(complicated, isn't it?). She was b 17 Aug 1783 in Otis (previously named Bethlehem) MA. She was the daughter of Elijah and Rachel Smith. If she's the right Rachel Smith, she married Levi Messenger 27 Apr 1802 in Otis MA. He was from Berhamstead (spellings differ), CT. I believe they had a son Allen, perhaps born MA abt 1806. They may have had a daughter Almena, b abt 1811 in New York where they had settled. Levi shows up in early census records (no names of his wife, children) in Chenango County NY. They lived in German from approx. 1810-1830. They lived in Lincklaen from approx. 1830-60.
I'm putting two and two together, but I don't have definite proof of Rachel being the person to whom I'm related, because her name doesn't show up on the census. By 1850, Levi, age 72, does not seem to have a wife living with him.
Anything sound familiar?
