Hi Debra,

Marriage certificates were not mandated in NY until c. 1880. Many communities did not comply until the early 1900s.

The Town Clerk's Office of Canaan, NY might have information - contact them directly. That's usually where all of the local records were kept in NY State or at the Surrogate Courthouse.
