New Lebanon Slavery

Hello All,

I am a Vermont historian researching the life of an African American man who lived in Middlebury, Vermont between 1834 and his death in the 1880s. He was born around 1806 in New Lebanon. From census research, I have ascertained that John and Reuben King of New Lebanon owned slaves in 1820. I think the subject of my research, Prince King, was a slave or free black man in one of these households. Most of my research has to do with his life after he purchased his land in Middlebury, but I am intrigued about his origins and want to know more. Does anyone have background information about the King family or slavery in Columbia County? From web research, I have found that John King was a prominent elected official.

Thanks for reading,

Amy Mincher
