Hello -

You've probably discovered by now that Town clerks do NOT have NYS death certificates. The TC will log in the certificate with some abridged info (what seems to vary with the TCs) then forward the real certificate to the NYS Department of Health in Albany.

Many Towns charge the same amount ($30) for their typed form letter containing the abbreviated info as the State does for a copy of the genuine article. The TC route will be faster, but the DoH route will provide you with the actual vital document.

This blog is helpful in explaining the steps to take. Read the comments and links for updates. New York can be trying to deal with regarding vital records.

NYS Department of Health - be sure to follow the steps for a NY STATE document and not New York CITY.

I'm very sorry about your sister and can relate to your desire to know what you can about her. I supposedly have a brother who was born and died in 1949, perhaps in Florida, but I haven't found any info on him yet. Good luck!
