Bob - I sent another message a little while ago so please read both (lest you think they are duplicates) I found the entire text of a 1774 will:
In the name of God, Amen, I SAMUEL ELLWELL, JR,( two Ls ) of the South Precinct of Dutchess County, being sick, I leave to my wife Mercy (Mary?) my house and farm and 8 acres of land during her life, "which said lot lies in the Oblong, and in Lot called No. 12, where Matthew Stevens now dwelleth." I also leave her a negro girl. All the rest I leave to my lawful children, and my son Samuel to have a double portion, and a negro boy when of age. (Other children not named) (no date) I make my wife executor. Witnesses, Robert Kean, Joshua Barnum Jr., John Birdsell. Proved April 20, 1774.
So, since Samuel was not of age in 1774 - maybe this is a lead....Vicky
