I spent a few hours with this but I'm afraid I found nothing concrete for your John....but there are some possibilities for a parent or grandparent, I think. Sometimes you can come in the "back door" with some other names to look at :) In 1870 John age 60 is with Smith age 10 in Dover and there is an Amos age 54 with them....perhaps a brother of John? I also saw that John & Anor are with their family in 1850 Amenia, Dutchess, NY....that was interesting. At NEHGS I found a will for a David Johnson of Washington dated 02 Dec 1799 probated 25 Nov 1809 in which he mentions three sons, John, David Jamison & Jacob, along with several daughters & grandchildren. In a codicil added Apr 1809 David mentions that John is living in Clinton. All 3 men could have had a son named John...?? In the book "General History of Dutchess County" by Philip H Smith 1877 page 429 there is this: (talking about the men who lived in early days above Washington Hollow) "David Johnson lived at Lithgow - he was one of the Nine Partners"....so this must mean he was David Jamison Johnson Sr. as we know he was an original Nine Partner. (Lithgow is on the east line of Washington) In the same book p 127 there is mention of a Robert Johnson who received a license to run a tavern in Amenia. In 1790 Washington there is a David Johnson with 3 males 16 & up, the only Johnson in that area. In 1800 we have indexed as JohnsTon, David there and then a John with 1 male under 10 & 3 males 26-45, again the only Johnsons in the area. In 1810 we have John, again as JohnsTon, with 1 male 16-26 & 1 Male 26-45 in Washington and by 1820 there are 2 Johns, one with no young males, Charles, David & Elijah. I suppose any of these could be brothers/sons....who could have sons named John...?? Other books I looked at were: Biographical Record of Dutchess County, NY by J H Beers Co 1897; Old Miscellaneous Records of Dutchess County by Vassar Brothers 1909; History of Dutchess County, NY by James H Smith 1882; History of Amenia by Newton Reed and Vols 1-91 at NYG&B If you would like a copy of the will abstract for David I can print & snail it to you. You can email me direct with your snail address if you would like - karimagameel@yahoo.com. I'm sorry I couldn't find anything much....Vicky in AZ Notify Administrator about this message?
