Elizabeth Carr, my great great grandmother, was the wife of my great great grandfather Leonard Laughton of Hope Falls, Hamilton County, N.Y. Leonard Laughton descended from Thomas Laughton, town clerk of Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts of early colonial times. Elizabeth descended from Robert Carr (Sir Robert Carr) of Rhode Island, a shipbuilder and older brother of Caleb Carr, the governor of Rhode Island. The family of Robert Carr married in with the family of George Lawton, of Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island and Elizabeth was descended from these Lawtons. William Carr married Susan Rothchilds in London and they came to the Colony of Massachusetts near the time the Puritans landed at Plymouth Rock. They stayed the first year I believe at what was called the Bay of Hope in Massachusetts. Their bible is still in the possession of the descendents of Caleb Carr. It metions their leaving London and arrival in the new world. Robert and Caleb were sent to live with William and Susan, by their father Benjamin Carr, brother of William. Another well known Carr that settled a few miles from Robert and Caleb was Sir William Carr, associate of Buckmaster. Additionally Elizabeth Carr descended distaff from the Almy family who had come to the Colony of Massachusetts before Plymouth Rock on exploratory expeditions.
