Where did John and Agnes Gray live after they left Catskill? When and where did they die? You might be able to obtain copies of their death certificates or those of their children. Such documents may answer some of your questions. Later census records will tell you what year they immigrated, whether or not they became naturalized citizens, how many years they were married and how many children they had. The reference to "Aberl, D. G." in the 1850 Catskill census was probably David G. Abeel whose will was probated in 1868. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nygreen2/wills_1861-1870.htm The 1855 Greene County, NY census, as transcribed by Fred Q. Bowman, does not mention John Gray, but it does list a 50 year old widower named James Gray. Living with him were his two children, Jennet M. (age 8) and James (age 6), and his sister, Jane Riddle (age 67). All four were born in Scotland and had lived in Catskill for 2 years except the younger James who had supposedly lived in Catskill for 6 years. This was followed by a question mark as to the accuracy of that entry. Greene County land records (deeds and mortgages) recorded since 1800 are on file in the County Clerk's office in Catskill. Early probate records are in the Greene County Historical Society's Vedder Memorial Library in Coxsackie. This library also has a large collection of early county newspapers.
