The 1880 Windham census lists Clarrisa Johnson, 75, widow, born NY, both parents born CT. She was boarding with her son, Truman Johnson, 41, married, retired jeweler; his wife, Julia A., 31, married, keeping house; their children, Hattie (6) and Burdett (3). All four were born in NY as were their parents. The Windham Journal, weekly newspaper published at Windham, Greene County, New York, issue of Thursday, November 27, 1884, Local Briefs: Two funerals here within two days of each other: That of Mrs. Clarissa Johnson, mother of Truman Johnson, a very estimable old lady, and Tempy, wife of John Sutton. Unfortunately neither woman's passing was mentioned in the Journal's column of deaths, which typically would have listed the date and place of death as well as the deceased's age. The town's vital records indicate that a Mrs. Clarrissa Beebe, 83, widow, occupation housekeeping, died in Windham and was buried in Jewett. Her place of birth, length of residence in this town, the names of her parents and their places of birth were not recorded. No date of death was given either. The next entry is for Temperance Sutton who is buried in the Windham Cemetery. She died on November 20, 1884, indicating that Clarissa would have died at around the same time. In the Jewett Heights Cemetery there is a gravestone for Clarissa, wife of Orrin Johnson, who died November 20, 1884, at the age of 83. Circumstantial evidence seems to point to her as being the mother of Truman Johnson. Apparently she married a Mr. Beebe sometime between 1880 and 1884. Truman Johnson died in Windham on July 13, 1901. The newspaper does not name his parents. You will have to obtain a copy of his death certificate from the Windham Town Clerk, PO Box 96, Hensonville, NY 12439. That document should tell you who his parents were.
