Town Historian and Postcard Collector to Speak June 26

The Mountain Top Historical Society welcomes Robert Uzzilia, Cairo Town Historian and a collector of northern Catskill Mountain postcards as a guest speaker on Thursday evening, June 26. Mr. Uzzilia has been collecting postcards for twenty years and has amassed a unique collection that will interest both postcard collectors and those interested in the history of our area. The talk starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Twilight Park Clubhouse. The entrance to Twilight Park, on Route 23A in Haines Falls, Town of Hunter, is located 4.5 miles on the left from the traffic light in Palenville, exit 20 off I-87, the New York State Thruway. This event is free and open to the public.

Mr. Uzzilia's collection has cards dating from the late 19th century when postcards were used primarily for advertising. His oldest postcard was printed in 1877. As the cards evolved, some of the best cards were fine lithographic reproductions with vivid colors produced in Germany and England. There are some remarkable scenes captured on these cards that depict places and times gone by. Not all of these cards were true to life-- prints were colorized, vivid scenery was exaggerated and objects were inserted to heighten interest.

Mr. Uzzilia, has been the Town of Cairo's historian since 1988. He has collected postcards since 1985 and has lectured on how postcards can be used as a research tool by historians. He is the co-editor of "Portrait of the Past", a photographic history of Cairo and wrote a series of articles in 2003 commemorating Cairo's bicentennial.

The Mountain Top Historical Society was established in 1974 to promote interest in and increase knowledge of the area known as "The Mountain Top" in the Northern Catskill Mountains. The Society encourages the study and preservation of the Mountain Top's art, literature, history, culture, folklore, legends and environment by means of a variety of programs, activities and projects. The Society is a not-for-profit organization and maintains the Mountain Top Hudson River School Art Trail Interpretative Center and the historic Ulster and Delaware train depot. These are located on the Haines Falls campus on Route 23A at the gateway to the Mountain Top.
