What kinds of records are you looking for? Have you checked the Tracing Your Roots in Greene County website? http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nygreen2/table_contents.htm Greene County, NY was created in 1800 from parts of Albany and Ulster counties. For records prior to 1800 you will need to look in one of those counties. Land records, specifically deeds and mortgages that have been recorded since the county's formation in 1800 are currently stored in the new county office building located at 411 Main Street in Catskill. Probate records prior to about 1920 have been transferred to the Greene County Historical Society's Vedder Memorial Library in Coxsackie. More recent probate records are in the Surrogate's office at the Greene County Courthouse in Catskill, although that building will soon be undergoing renovations and all court records and offices will be temporarily moved to another location until the construction is completed. The Greene County Legislature has made arrangements with the Albany Diocese to rent the former St. Patrick's school buildlings in Catskill during this period. It's quite possible that some records may be temporarily or permanently moved to the county's archival repository located in the former hospital building in Catskill. New York State did not require its town, village and city clerks to keep vital records until about 1880. Church records that weren't misplaced, stolen, or destroyed by fires or floods may be stored in church repositories in other states, in museums not necessarily located anywhere near the church, with the present clergyman or other church official, or in private hands.
