According to his gravestone in the Spruceton Cemetery, Town of Lexington, Greene County, NY, Garwood Pelham died 7 Apr 1871, aged 30 years, 2 months, 18 days. His death notice and the story below about his death erroneously refer to him as George.

The Windham Journal, weekly newspaper published at Windham, Greene County, New York, issue of Thursday, April 18, 1871, Died: PELHAM - At Westkill, April 7th, George Pelham, aged about 30 years.

Singular Fatality.

A MAN KILLED BY THE STING OF A BEE.

On Thursday morning last, Mr. GEO. PELHAM, son of ELISHA PELHAM, of Westkill, left his father's house, for a hunting excursion. As he was returning in the afternoon, and while passing the house of Mr. JAMES KIRK, a honey bee alighted on his ear, and stung him. He thought nothing of such a simple affair, and went on home. After arriving there, he said he was very hungry, and went into the pantry to eat. Soon after, he complained of feeling faint, and turned spotted. Dr. S. L. FORD was sent for, but before he reached Mr. PELHAM'S house, the young man had died. In less than one hour from the time he was stung, he was a corpse. We have heard of similar cases before, but this is the first instance of death from the sting of a bee, occurring within our observation.

Mr. PELHAM, the deceased, was a hale, strong young man. He was 30 years of age, and a young man of steady habits. He had been living in Pennsylvania, and was paying a visit to his parents, when his death occurred.
