Thanks Forgot about index numbers on divorce records from 1940's in NY? Advice?

You are right index numbers are public record, and while one can not get details at least one can get the right names and a general date. But one must make a request at the RIGHT court and pay a fee for a search. The problem is what if you don't know which court, one could be searching every court house in every county of NY. That is why I was seeking a free data base on the net. Thanks Nancy.
