O'HAGANS in New York 1840-1860

My grandmother was an O’Hagan and we have been able to find out very little about her family as her parents both died when she was a child. Her name was Lula Blanche O’Hagan born in Pierce County, Georgia, USA in 1898. Her parents both died when she was about 9 years old, and she was sent to live with a maternal uncle. Her father’s name was Charles Ephraim O’Hagan born in about 1835 - 1845 who we know immigrated from Ireland in 1847. On one census record he is recorded as coming from Ireland Free State. I am not sure if that means anything or not about the part of Ireland he may have been from. If the research here is actually the correct line information for my Great-Grandfather, I may be headed in the right direction. I am certain of the information once we get to Pierce County, Georgia, but before that, I am unsure if I have the right person. Any help would be a blessing. From the research I think is correct so far, here is what I have been able to piece together by following the names and dates mostly from Census records.

My Great-Grandfather:

Charles Ephraim O’Hagan

born @ 1835 - 1845 in Ireland

Immigrated in 1847 to the US

Listed in 1850 Census in New York City with the following that I believe is his family:

Charles O’Hagan – age 41

Elizabeth O’Hagan – age 36

Catharine J. O’Hagan – age 12

Charles E. O’Hagan – age 6

Arnold O’Hagan – age 2

Listed in the 1860 Census in New York City with the following:

Sarah M. O’Hagan – 38

Charles E. O’Hagan – 15

Arnold O’Hagan – 11

Elizabeth O’Hagan lived next door in this Census

Listed on a Marriage record in Chatham County Georgia in 1866:

Ephraim O’Hagan marries Margaret Tuberty in Savannah, Georgia

Both listed as Irish born

Listed in the 1870 Census in Chatham County, Georgia with the following:

Charles O’Hagan - age 30 – Head of House and Shoe Clerk

Margareet O’Hagan – age 28 – Wife and Keeper of House

Charles O’Hagan – age 4 - Son

Joseph O’Hagan – age 2 – Son

Listed in the 1880 Census in Chatham County, Georgia with the following:

Ephraim O’Hagan – age 35 – Head of House and Shoe Clerk

Margaret O’Hagan – age 28 – Wife

Charles O’Hagan – age 13 – Son – At School

Joseph O’Hagan – age 11 – Son

Patrick Tuberty – age 41 – Boarder - Widowed – Keeps a Shoe Store

Danie Tuberty – age 13 – Boarder – At School

John Tuberty – age 10 – Boarder – At School

Listed on a Marriage record with Eulerson S. Gibbs in Pierce County, Georgia in 1896

E.O. Hagan marries Eulerson S. Gibbs February 24, 1896 in Pierce County, Georgia

Listed on 1900 Pierce County Georgia Census records with:

Ephraim O’Hagan – Head of House – born Ireland 1835

Lenna O’ Hagan – Wife – born Michigan December 1870

Lula B. O’Hagan – Daughter – born Georgia September 1898 (This is my Grandmother – Lula Blanche O’Hagan)

Joseph – Son – born in Georgia in October 1868

Sometime between 1900 and 1910, Ephraim and Lenna both died and their younger children were sent to live with their mother’s sister and brother-in-law. My grandmother and apparently a younger brother appear on the 1910 Census in their uncle’s home, Mr. Dan T. Cowart.

We found records at a Ware County Georgia cemetery stating that Dan T. Cowart bought burial plots for an Ephraim O’Hagan and Mrs. E. O’Hagan as well as a Doyle O’Hagan that I believe was my grandmother’s brother.

Listed on the 1910 Census are my grandmother and her brother with the following:

O. F. Cowart – age 32 –Head of House – Market/Grocer

Lillie Blanche Cowart – age 32 – Wife

Eula Cowart – age 7 – Daughter

J. J. Gibbs - age 52 – Mother in Law

J.R. Gibbs – age 22 – Brother in Law

Blanche O’Hagan – age 10 – Niece

J.D. O’Hagan – age 8 – Nephew

In the next listings in 1920 and 1930 Census records my Grandmother, Blanche is married to my Grandfather, Barney Baldwin and living next door to the Cowarts renting a home from them and her children are eventually listed including my father, John Ephraim Baldwin being 1 month old on the 1930 Census record. After that I have no other documentation and know most of the rest of the story from my father.

Thank You!
