Hi Bob,

In my cases it was death certificates but given that the same costs and rules apply for births and marriages then the principle is the same.

I'd used the online indexes to narrow down 3 possibilities and wanted to order the certificates. To order individual certificates when you quote the number is $10, therefore cost for me is $30.

However to request a search for one year (1894) is $15, plus another $2 for the extra year (1895), so this total comes to $17.

I did email the Vital Records Department first and their reply is in the original message.

I took the latter option and received 4 certificates based on the information I supplied! These included the 3 possibilities I'd identified - none of which turned out to be who I was looking for!!!

I have used NYC Vital Records on many occasions prior to the indexes being posted online with about an 80% success rate and I posted the original message only for the benefit of researchers like myself who cannot visit the library or the records office in person and want to maximise their research costs.

Regards - Michael, Liverpool, UK.
