Mary,

I think your Thomas Bass is on the 1860 census in Oneida Co. with his parents. The surname is indexed as Buss. In the book "Pioneer history of Camden, Oneida County, New York" there is a mention of Ephraim Bass & his mother whose first name isn`t given. I`ll paste the two relevant sections below. You can find the book on line at http://www.archive.org/index.php

can`t locate Ephraim Bass in 1850 but there is this record that me be for his mother:

Can`t find her in 1860.

LEWIS PRESTON house: pg. 184 & 185
It was built by Caleb Preston for his son Lewis, who occu-
pied it for a few years, then located in the West, and it
was rented to a widow woman with two sons, Billy and Ephraim Bass, the former being the man of all work for Caleb Preston. It was a very primitive building, having been put together with wooden pins instead of nails. Here the widow lived with her two sons many years. A great lover of flowers, she was seldom seen without a bunch of the old-fashioned and sweet-smelling blossoms, and the ground around her little cottage was a mass of brightness. No descendants living in Camden. Mrs. Bass died April 16, 1867, aged 93 years.

pg. 195
In 1828 there was an English family by the name of Bass that lived half a mile back of the Lambie school-house; there was no school-house then, the road that led to his clearing came out there. There were two sons. Their mother made bobinet lace. Mr. Bass had two cows that had to do the work of oxen, beside supplying the family with milk.

(the only Bass in Camden on the 1830 census was a James Basse. He had living in his household 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 15-20 & 1 female 40-50.)
