I located a Robert Thompson in the 1840 census showing he lived in Gaines. How far back does the town hold the land records or birth records for Gaines? I know birth records in NY weren't kept within the county offices like they are in Michigan. The family left there after 1840, probably by 1843, as Syrsia's father, John A. Lockwood sold land where they lived in NY (New Lebanon) and headed to Michigan. They all settled, for a time, in Highland, Oakland Co. MI. My gr gr grandfather, Smith Thompson, son of Robert and Syrsia (Surrissa, Clorisa, Thresa-depending on the document), was born in Orleans Co in 1838. All of Robert's children were born in New York, Polly, Sarah, Joseph, Smith, and Ellen. Thank you for any suggestions offered. Kathy Notify Administrator about this message?
