Carol: If you are able to view the 1870 census that you referenced, notice the first two columns..Dwelling #'d and Families #'d. I believe the enumerator placed those designations beside the incorrect individuals for several families on that page.

The head of the McGuire household is indicated to be James, 8 years old. I believe Ann McGuire, age 45, born Ireland, should be the head of that household.
Residing in Ann's household are her children, all born NY, plus the 5 black individuals (last names of Wheadon, Wells and Gedion/Gedgon..hard to read that last name (Georger in the Ancestry index) , all born Virginia.

Also listed is John Brown, born Ireland..however, I believe John Brown should be the head of the next household enumerated. I hope I haven't confused you.

If you do not have access to this census, I'd be happy to type out the information for you.
Carolyn
