[] I have it that a Sarah Phillips married a Meres Wyman, and that they lived in Oswego County, New York. Seems she lived from about 1794 to about 183o - based on census data and an 1880 newspaper article about Meres, there in New Haven, NY. [] The 1880 newspaper article mentioned 8 children. It appears from the census data that 3 never survived to either the 1820 or 1830 US Censuses. A fourth seems to have arrived early and may have been from an earlier marriage. If so, Sarah's maiden name likely was other than Phillips. [] By 1880, Meres thought only 3 children were living, an unnamed daughter, who had left Michigan and whose whereabouts were unknown; an unnamed son that had gone to California and an unnamed son who had gone to Canada. [] I'm fairly certain that Eliza Wyman, b1818/19 in Oswego County, New York, is the daughter, although I'm unable to place her in Michigan. I do have her also in Upper Canada (Ontario), Illinois, Wisconsin, and Kansas. So it does appear that the mariner father could have lost track of her whereabouts. [] One of the sons could be the George Franklin Wyman (1818-1893) out in California, where descendants cannot connect the subject with parents. [] And of course there is the third surviving child/son in Canada, whom I don't have a guess for at the present. He may have used the Wiman rather than Wyman spelling of the surname. Meres' mother, Hannah (Bacon) Wyman(c1769-1843), widow of Gardner Wyman(c1765-1812), went to Upper Canada (area around Kingston) after 1830, and she may have done so to be near some of her family. [] Any and all help sorting out Eliza Wyman's ancestral family would be appreciated. Eliza's descendant family (Fourre) is fairly well understood, and I will share that with interested family - just write. ---John Notify Administrator about this message?
