My earliest known Hopper ancestor was Richard Hopper, a farmer and a weaver, who lived in Philipstown at the time of the Revolutionary War and for some time previous to that, as well. Revolutionary troop encampments were posted on the Hopper farm. Richard is said to have been of Dutch descent; his name, as shown in "the old Dutch family Bible", was Hoppe. I am descended from his son Edward, who married 1)Abigail Sirrine and 2)Hannah Sirrin Entrott, both daughters of Isaac and Sarah Sirrine. Edward was born 20 April, 1762, and died 12 November, 1850. He and Abigail had the following children: Effie, b. 11 Dec. 1792 Richard, b. 4 March, 1795 Nathaniel, b. ca. 1797 Michael, b. 22 June, 1802 Samuel, b. 1803 My line continues with Richard Hopper, known as Rev. Richard Hopper, who married 1) Ruth Cronk, daugher of Teunis Cronk and Elizabeth Arnold, and 2)Sarah Boyd. Richard and Ruth had the following children: Effie, b. 28 June, 1821 Dennis, b. 29 Aug. 1822 John G., b. 28 Jan. 1827 Phebe Jane, b. 7 Oct. 1829 Abigail Eliza, b. 1839 Rev. Richard Hoper was influential in the establishment of South Highland Methodist Church. The Hopper farm was located at what is now known as Travis Corners to the north of the present S. Highland Church. Going on down in my line of descent, John G. Hopper married Elizabeth Croft, daughter of Henry Croft and Mary Nelson. John was wounded in the Civil War, returned to Philipstown, and died in 1871. I would very much like to learn more about the early history of this family and would be gald to share information with anyone else who is connected to them. Notify Administrator about this message?
