I am curious. I just discovered the maiden name of my ggg grandmother, Frances/Fancina Simmons. She married Jeremiah Mayhew in 1837 at an Episcopal Church in Jamaica, NY. My folks however, are mixed-blood Native Americans, from either/both the Setauket and/or Shinnecock tribes. There is some family lore that we are also part Portuguese.

Where did your Simmons family live? It might help me figure out how my family acquired the surname.

TIA
