The eastern three-quarters of Queens County -- the Town of North Hempstead, the Town of Hempstead and the Town of Oyster Bay -- seceded from Queens County and formed Nassau County on January 1, 1899.

The area that became the Village of Hempstead in 1853 was in the Town of Hempstead.
