There are 2 pieces of data you might want to check on again before you pursue this line of inquiry.

If your man were to have been born in 1848, he would have been 13 when the war began and 16 or 17 when it ended.

The installation was known as Camp Morris until 1898, so you will probably not find any records of any type for Fort Totten in the Civil War.
