Linda,
The various Curtin directories of 1860s-70s do list a Christian W. Schiffer, also spelled as Christian W. Schaffer living on Fulton (now Jamaica Ave.) near the toll gate (probably the gate near Union Hall St.) in Jamaica Village - he was a merchant at Fulton Ave. (Jamaica Ave.) near Flushing rd. (now Parsons Blvd.). The 1870 Census index shows a Christian Schaffer age 47, b. Bavaria, living in Brooklyn's 15th Ward (microfilm roll 956, page 377); same index has a George, age 42, b.NY, in Brooklyn 14th Ward (Roll 955, page 8), and also a George, age 41, b. Germany, in 10th Ward of Brooklyn (microfilm roll 951, p.338).

Despite how these modern suburbanites think, Jamaica, Queens County, and Brooklyn are all on Long Island. Good luck in your search.
George
