Over the past year I have been collecting information (mostly from primary sources) on my direct ancestor Major Michael S. Vandercook (1774-1852)with the goal of writing his biography. I would like to establish contact with other researchers to complement the work with details about his personal life and his service in the military and in public office. Michael operated a store in Pittstown, Rensselaer County, NY, for many years. Unfortunately a fire in 1816 wiped out his business records. Perhaps later business records survived? Michael never truly recovered from the financial setback of that fire(the lost inventory was valued at 15,000 dollars, a fortune in those days). In the War of 1812, he was appointed a brigade inspector by Governor Tompkins and served with his father-in-law General Gilbert Eddy. Michael was an active local politician, twice nominated for the State Assembly. He was a member of a committee of county politicians who wrote a lengthy letter to Thomas Jefferson, urging him to run for reelection. He was one of two presidential electors from Rensselaer County in 1812. And as county sheriff, his name frequently appeared in local newspapers to announce public auctions of debtors' personal property and real estate. Sadly, he met the same fate himself late in life. I am sure there is much more that can be learned about this interesting man if we pool resources. Of course, I will happily acknowledge assistance from any contributor.
Thanks in advance.
Ron Bachman, ggg-grandson of Michael S. Vandercook.
