We’ve been working on the extended family of Garret and Maria Neefus Van Pelt for a while now. Rather than take more time to get all of the ducks in a perfect row, here are the collateral surnames found to date in the Daniel and Anna Barnhart Van Pelt family.
Our Daniel was born about 1770 (in NJ) and his will was recorded 29 Mar 1817 at Rensselaer Co., NY. Anna was born abt 1774, her parents unknown. Anna probably died there after the 1830 census, when she appears to have been with son Christopher’s family.
This family is far from complete, but we do know that his surviving children (from his will) were Christopher, Isaiah, Lydia, Rebecca, Rachel, Sally Ann, and Elizah Jane. We have been unable to follow Rebecca, Rachel, Sally Ann, or Elizah Jane Van Pelt and there may have also been another daughter, Polly.
Correct birth order seems to be: Christopher (b. 12 Apr 1794, d. 27 Dec 1841, m. 1, Hannah Way; m.2, Delinda Hakes), perhaps Polly, b. abt 1795, Lydia (b.1795/96, m. Abram Slingerland), Isaiah (b. abt 1803, d. bef 20 Sep 1829, m. 1823, Elizabeth Wilson), Rebecca (b. 1801-1810), Rachel (b. 1801-1810), Sally Ann (b. c1810), and Elizah Jane (b. 1810-20). We have been unable to follow Rebecca, Rachel, Sally Ann, or Elizah Jane Van Pelt.
If your search brought you here, more information - including sources - is available. There are still many unknown maiden names in these families, so all new cuzzins with puzzle pieces to share will be most welcome. Collateral surname lists for Daniel’s siblings will be posted as time permits, but the basic research exists now. Note that there is much confusion about the Van Pelt families, including multiple Daniels who have been frequently misidentified.
