Per the New York Times of Aug 13 1946, p.24:

"Shank's Village is a 2,400-unit development of converted barracks at Camp Shanks, NY [Orangeburg, NY], that is being turned into an emergency housing center by the FPHA [Federal Public Housing Authority] to accommodate overcrowded colleges in this area. Apartments not needed by college students are to go to non-student veterans. Columbia, acting for other colleges as well as itself, had contracted for 1,500 apartments and, through a subcontract, had agreed to allot 200 to Fairleigh Dickinson."

Subsequent articles report that the number of apartments was to be reduced, and that five other colleges would participate.
