Seeking information about finding a birth certificate.

I am seeking a birth certificate for my ancestor, John henry Longstaff who was born in 1849 and could have been born in the county of Richmond, for he was listed on the 1850 Census at the age of 1 month, along with his family and three years later they sailed for Australia. Could some one help please with information to what I should be looking for or advise me as to what I can do to find a certificate or a document.
