Allan, you're not going to find a birth certificate.

However, if you're looking specifically for birth information, I have two suggestions:

1) Civil records - a long shot. See early SI Vital Records (births) at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrichmo/vitals.html#births

2) Church records. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrichmo/fhl/fhl_beta2.html and scroll down to Church History and Records.
