Carol, I think the Mary Smirl on the 1850 census in Oswegatchie is your Mary who m HR Ivory despite the age discrepancy. There is an article in the April 13, 1927 issue of the Gouverneur Free Press about the death of Miss Racheline Smirl who died in Omaha, NE on March 25th, 1927. It mentions a brother Sam, a sister Jane & a niece, Miss Anna Ivory of Council Bluffs. There are a few other articles at the NNYLN site that mention Smirls. The site is here: http://news.nnyln.net/ Choose the St. Lawrence Co. newspapers & search for Smirl. On the 1850 Mary Smirl has a brother George b. abt 1830. On the 1880 & 1900 census in Fayette Co., Iowa there is a George Smirl, b. NY, abt. 1829. This is probably Mary`s brother.
