Laflammes of St. Lawrence County NY

As many posters know, I have been *collecting* Laflammes for about 40 years. In my attempts to assist another researcher with her line, we have encountered another puzzler whom I’ve not been able to connect to a parent. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

This particular family settled in Saint Lawrence County NY, primarily in Oswegatchie Township, a ward/district of Ogdensburg City. Most of the family members continued to live in the same area and usually within close proximity to other family members. Unless otherwise stated, all census findings are for Oswegatchie.

After the turn of the century, most family members used the LaFlam version of the name, with exceptions being earlier years when census enumerators/priests/etc. recorded whatever version each was familiar with. When I have found incorrect indexing of names, I have submitted the corrections to Ancestry.com so that future researchers won’t have to spend hours poring over long lists! Many times, the incorrect indexing was simply an error by a transcriber not being able to properly decipher the old script.

Although JOSEPH LAFLAMME states in the 1900 US Census that he migrated in 1830, we have not found him earlier than 1850.

1850 USC - Indexed as GAFLUM:
Joseph, 30, NY
Isabell, 27, NY
Isabell, 2, NY

Comment: Ditto marks were used for birthplaces and most other enumerations show both Joseph and Isabelle as born in Canada

1860 USC - Indexed as LFLANE:
Joseph, 34, Canada
Issabell, 32, Canada
Mary, 9, NY
Joseph, 6, NY
Solomon, 4, NY
Eliza, 2, NY

1870 USC - Indexed as LAFLAME:
Joseph, 42, Canada
Elizabeth, 40, Canada
Mary A., 18, NY
Joseph, 16, NY
Soleman, 14, NY
Eliza, 11, NY
Alexander, 6, NY

1880 USC - Indexed as LAFLAM:
Joseph, 40, Canada
Elizabeth, 40, Canada
Joseph, 22, NY
Elizabeth, 21, Canada - Daughter-in-law

Comment: Ages cited for parents were obviously incorrect. Errors in ages were unfortunately far too common, depending on who provided the data.

1900 USC - Indexed as SAFLAM:
Joseph, 74, Apr 1826, Canada - married 55 years - Emigrated 1830
Isabelle, 71, Dec 1828, Canada - 7 children/3 still living

1910 USC - Indexed as LAFLAM:
Joseph, 85, Canada - Widowed - Emigrated 1836
Solomon, 53, NY - Widowed
William, 30, NY - Grandson

This recap shows the discrepancy of birth years for JOSEPH:
1850 - age 30 - born @1820
1860 - age 34 - born @1826
1870 - age 42 - born @1828
1880 - age 40 - born @1840
1900 - age 74 - born Apr 1826
1910 - age 85 - born @1825
Died 8 Jul 1914 - age 90 - born @1824

Is he possibly the son of Pierre-Alexis Laflammes & Angelique Labrecque?
They had a son Joseph baptized 21 Aug 1823 at Sts-Gervais-et-Protais, Bellechasse.
I’ve never been able to find anything further on that Joseph in Quebec records.

ISABELLE/ELIZABETH - wife of Joseph - In one instance, her 1st name is shown as Adelaide. Surnames assigned to her in various records are LALIME, LABINE, and LARIME.
Each of those names are distortions and could be most anything!
Searches to identify her or others of those names in the county have been fruitless.

This recap shows the discrepancy of birth years for ISABELLE:
1850 - age 27 - born @1823
1860 - age 32 - born @1828
1870 - age 40 - born @1830
1880 - age 40 - born @1840
1900 - age 71 - born Dec 1828
Died 18 Sep 1907 - age 87 - born @1820

No marriage record has been found for Joseph and Isabelle, but was apparently @1845-1848.

Children born to Joseph and Isabelle are as follows. This listing has only the basics for each child. Their individual families will be posted further along. Unless otherwise noted, marriages and deaths are recorded at Notre Dame Church of Ogdensburg website.

1. ISABELLE - born @1848 per age 2 in the 1850 USC. She is not listed in the 1860 USC and appears to have died young.

2. MARIE A. - born @1851 or 1852 per age 9 in the 1860 and age 18 in the 1870. She died 15 Jun 1871.

3. JOSEPH - born Jan 1855 per 1900 USC - married ELIZABETH PLAMONDON (aka Plumadon/Plumadore/etc.) on 30 Dec 1877. Joseph died 30 Mar 1922.

4. SALOMON - born Dec 1855 per 1900 USC - married 1st to EMMA GIRARD <incorrectly cited as GIRAND on marriage entry> on 4 Oct 1876 - married 2nd MARGUERITE (Maiden name unknown) after 1910 USC and before 1920 USC. Salomon died 26 Dec 1923.

5. ELIZABETH - born Oct 1859 per 1900 USC - married GEORGES DUMAS JR on 9 Jan 1879. I have not located a death entry for her, but the tombstone listing cites her years as 1859 to 1959.

6. ALEXANDRE - born @1864 per 1870 USC. He is not with the family and apparently died young.

7. FRANCOIS/FRANCIS/FRANK - Born after 1860 USC and died 23 Mar 1870.

Per the 1900 USC, Isabelle had birthed 7 children and 3 were still living. Recapping, those that died prior to 1900 were Isabelle, Marie A., Alexandre, and Francois. Those still living were Joseph JR, Salomon, and Elizabeth. Each of those children will be continued in separate messages.

I hope this data will assist others who may be connected, and I strongly urge anyone who has further data to please post it.

Thanks,
Bev
