In the file (Box 029, File 18) was an Affidavit of Death signed by the executor named in Walter Broughton's will, i.e. Jacob T. E. Pruyn of the Town of Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County NY.

Pruyn stated that Walter died on or about the 27th day of August 1841, a resident of Stillwater. He left a widow Elizabeth Broughton; one son, Charles, resident of Stillwater; and one daughter Betsey wife of Edward Thurston of the City of Baltimore his only heirs and next-of-kin. Pruyn referred to Walter's will dated July 3 1840 and dated his affidavit the 3rd of August 1842.

The will was transcribed into Will Book #13 at pages 81-82, along with the rest of the probate proceedings which began at page 77. In the will Walter referred to his wife Elizabeth, son Charles, daughter Betsey wife of Edward Thurston and a granddaughter "Elizabeth the only surviving child of my son Abner" and "her mother Ester Broughton, the widow of my son Abner."

The recorded proceedings are merely a recitation of the information in the Pruyn's affidavit, the affidavits of the witnesses to the will and the issuance of a citation to appear sent to the survivors as a formality. Those original affidavits and the citation (bearing signatures of those survivors admitting service) plus an executor's oath form signed by Pruyn and a inventory of the estate all remain in the file.

I read through these recordings and papers hoping that there might be some mention of a burial place or a receipt from the cemetery/funeral director, but found nothing to help. I haven't been able to locate a gravestone having been recorded for him in Stillwater. I thought if there was some connection to Schaghticoke he might have been buried over there, but couldn't find his name in the Rensselaer County inscriptions list either.

Good luck in all your searches,

Lynn Calvin
Saratoga County NY
