Diane,

I don't know how to tell you this, but I have the feeling that you are tripping over a minor detail of historical geography. Please ignore modern county boundary lines. The SARATOGA Tax District of Albany County, NY included land on both sides of the Hudson River from present day Mechanicville to Ft. Edward. The Half Moon Tax District was south of Mechanicville, on the west side of the Hudson River only.

There appear to be three men named Joseph Potter, who settled in the Hudson River corridor. Three men by that name show up on the tax lists in different districts. In the 18th century a man's name only appeared on the tax list for only the district in which he actually lived. One Joseph Potter is on the October 23, 1779 Half Moon Tax List and the other Joseph Potter had settled in the Saratoga Patent of the Saratoga Tax District of Albany County, NY, in 1765. A third Joseph Potter shows up on the Saratoga west list in 1786. All of the information that I have on these men indicates that the Joseph Potter, who lived on the East side of the Hudson and who was married to Dinah Gifford was not the father of a son named "Joseph Potter".

The Joseph Potter, who lived in the Saratoga Tax District was married to Dinah Gifford is designated as # 27 in Part 8 of Charles Edward Potter's book, "The Genealogy of the Potter Families in America".

Joseph(6) Potter [Nathaniel(5), Stokes(4), Nathaniel(3), Nathaniel(2), Robert(1)] was born July 31, 1735 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and died Abt. March 14, 1832 in Fort Ann, Washington, New York. He married Dinah Gifford February 13, 1755 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts, daughter of Jonathan Gifford and Elizabeth Potter. She was born June 17, 1733 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts, and died in Fort Ann, Washington, New York.

Children of Joseph Potter and Dinah Gifford are:

i. Elizabeth Potter. She married Jonathan Prince.

ii. Desire Potter, born 1756 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts; died July 28, 1827 in Easton, Washington, New York. She married Bildad Benson Abt. 1774 in Washington, New York.

iii. Nathaniel Potter, born November 23, 1757 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts; died April 18, 1854 in Washington, New York. He married Peace Mosher November 20, 1791 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts21; born 1766 in Westerly, Rhode Island; died 1807 in Washington, New York.

iv. Jonathan Potter, born May 11, 1765 in Washington Co., New York; died September 30, 1835 in Washington, New York. He married Mary Unknown Abt. 1792 in Washington, New York; born 1772; died 1852.

v. Cornelius Potter, born September 04, 1767 in Washington Co., New York; died August 11, 1835 in Washington, New York. He married Judith Benson Abt. 1791 in Washington, New York.

vi. David Potter, born 1769 in Granville, Washington, New York; died September 1849.

vii. Jeremiah Potter, born July 01, 1771 in Washington Co., New York. He married (1) Dorcas Gulick on January 01, 178922; born 1767. He married (2) Philomelia Haskins on January 10, 1796; born 1776. He married (3) Martha S. Bidwell January 30, 1817; born 1784.

viii. William Potter, born 1772 in North Hudson, Washington, New York; died July 26, 1858.

ix. Thomas Potter, born 1774 in Fort Ann, Washington, New York; died 1836 in Michigan.

x. Christopher Potter, born 1776 in Granville, Washington, New York.

xi. Stephen Potter, born June 14, 1777 in Washington Co., New York; died February 06, 184922. He married Lydia Potter; born 1777; died 1851.

xii. Roba Potter, born Abt. 1779 in Washington, New York. She married Joel Talmadge.

I can tell you about the other Potters, who were part of the Quaker enclave in the Saratoga Patent on the east side of Hudson River. However, I have not paid any attention to the Potters, who lived in the Half Moon Tax District.

The Potters in the Tax records for Albany County before 1791 were:

Abel - 1786 Half Moon; 1788 Half Moon
Allen - 1786, 1787 & 1788 Saratoga East
Cornelius - 1787 & 1788 Saratoga East
Constant - 1786 & 1787 Saratoga North
Ephraim - 1787 Saratoga West; 1788 Stillwater
George - 1788 Saratoga East
John - March & October 1779 Saratoga
Jonathan - 1786 & 1788 Saratoga East
Joseph - October 1779 Half Moon; 1788 Half Moon
Joseph - 1786 Saratoga West
Joseph - 1786 & 1788 Saratoga East
Nathaniel - 1786, 1787 & 1788 Saratoga east
Rowland - 1787, Saratoga west; 1788 Stillwater
Simeon - March 1779 Saratoga
William - 1786, & 1787 Saratoga West; 1788 Stillwater

I know which of the above listed taxpayers are related to Joseph Potter and Dinah Gifford.

If I can help you with any of these Albany County New York taxpayers, feel free to ask.

Leslie Potter
