Below are two census records that I believe are your Benedicts. In a search of http://books.google.com/ I found a book "The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America" On pg 304 & 305 is #52 Elihu Benedict. Among his children is Harlow b. Oct. 17, 1810 m. March 6, 1839 Fanny Shields. They reside in Balston Spa & among their children is William b. May 11, 1856.
On the 1850 census for Saratoga Co. there are two male Shields b. in Ireland, both in the same family in the town of Greenfield. Likely Fanny`s family. I`ll transcribe that census below.

(the Benedicts are living in Milton in 1850, Harlow is "Arnold", probably the census taker mis-heard his name. Fanny, Harrison, Adeline & Maynard are in the household)
