There is a 1917 WWI draft registraton card for Lawrence Hargraves in Schenectady. He gives his birthdate/place as 13 Feb. 1890 in Ausable Chasm, NY. The 1920 & 1930 census shows only two Lawrence Hargraves in Schenectady, father & son. In 1920, Lawrence is age 28. Living with him & his wife Grace, 27, are their two children Mary & Lawrence & his mother-in-law Mary Young, age 70, b. Ireland.
Ausable Chasm is in Clinton co., NY. I did not find a Lawrence Hargraves there on the 1900 or 1910 census. However there is a 9 yr. old Lawrence Hargraves, b. NY, living in Springfield City, Hampden Co, Massachusetts with his parents George, 32 & Harriet, 36, both born NY. There are two other children in the home, Linnie, 7 & Mildred, 3, both b. Mass. This census says Lawrence was b. Feb. 1891. Despite the year difference I think this is the same Lawrence Hargraves who filled out the WWI draft card in Schenectady. A George Hargraves, age 12, is on the 1880 census in Dannemora, Clinton co., NY with his parents Lawrence & Maria Hargraves. I`ll paste that below.
In 1880 one of the children of Lawrence Hargraves in Dannemora is Margarett, age 4. In 1910, Lawrence Hargrave, age 19, is in Albany, NY, living with the Daniel & Margaret McGarr family. He is listed as a nephew. Margaret is age 33. This is probably your Lawrence.
On the 1910 census the only Grace Young, b. abt 1893 in NY with a mother named Mary who was b.in Ireland is living in Plattsburg, Clinton Co., NY with Mary, age 61 & Cornelius, her father, age 65.
You can send for your father`s SS5 application for account/card form which will give you both his parents names & his birthplace. He is on the SSDI at Rootsweb where you can search & then generate a letter to the SS Admin. requesting the form.
