I am not related to this family, but the name caught my eye. I have a photo of a map of Mongaup Valley dated 1856 where I found my GGGGrandfather Martin Margison and his sons living next door to the Methodist Church. A few houses away from them, at the corner of Rt. 17B and Creamery Rd is the L.H. Bates Hotel. Any relation to your Lyman Bates?
