I am looking to verify/disprove this quote (see below) and for any information abt. Rachel SWEEDEN, especially who here parents may have been and any SWEEDEN families in either Stockbridge, MA or Tioga Co., NY Rachel was b. abt 1774, possibly in Stockbridge,Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, but the following account indicates she was the 1st white child b. in Tioga county:[From Bios of men from Candor, NY, FROM OUR COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE, A MEMORIAL HISOTRY OF TIOGA COUNTY, NEW YORK, EDITED BY: LEROY W. KINGMAN, W. A. FERGUSSON & CO. ELMIRA, N. Y., 189? under listing for MAJOR ABRAM H. KROM: "Mrs. Krom, to whom the major was married on January 27, 1864, is of sterling pioneer stock. Her maiden name was Rachel J. Potter. Her parents were Captain Harvey and Mary (Hart) Potter, and her maternal grandfather was Capt. Abel Hart, whose wife was the first white child born in Tioga county"]; in 1795, when she m. Capt. Abel Hart, Jr., she is reportedly of Stockbridge, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts (his family were of Stockbridge bef. emigrating to Tioga Co., NY, as well); abt 1799 emigrated to Candor, Tioga County, New York from Massachusetts; d. 08 October 1848 and is thought to be buried either at Maple Grove Cem., Candor, Tioga Co., N.Y. (or Milford Cem., Milford, Connecticut) [Found in cemetery records of Maple Grove Cem., Candor, Tioga Co., N.Y. - "HART Rachael, wife of Abel, d. Oct 8, 1848, ae. 74 y." [Abel HART came from Stockbridge in December, 1796, and located on lot 10, first tier, northwest section 12, now known as the 'old homestead lot.' He had visited previously his old townsmen in Brown's Settlement on the Boston Purchase, and was so well pleased with the country that in February, 1794, he came with his family to make a permanent settlement. He did not immediately come to this place, but located first about five miles below Binghamton, near General Stoddard. He first built a plank house with one room, and soon afterwards added to it.] I have a lot on the HART line, but have the proverbial "brick wall" when it comes to the SWEEDEN line; I appreciate any clues. Thanks for your time! God bless, Freda Hart-Riley Notify Administrator about this message?
