I have been researching the Astor House Hotel in Shanghai, China for the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astor_House,_Shanghai In 1860 DeWitt Clinton Jansen (born at Shawangunk, New York on 8 November 1840; died 6 November 1894 in Shanghai), a former American merchant sailor and colporteur in China's interior, purchased the Astor House Hotel. Jansen was to own the Hotel and reside there with his wife, Ellen McGrath Jansen (died 1919), and their six children until his death in 1894. Can anyone provide information about his parents, children, siblings? Would love to know more about his career in the merchant navy, how he came to Shanghai. It could be that he is the same as: DeWitt Clinton Jansen, christened 6 November 1847 in the Town of Shawangunk, Ulster County, New York. He is the son of John M. Jansen and Rachel Terwilliger. Any help provided would be appreciated. Notify Administrator about this message?
