Tried direct email to your address but it bounced--guess your system doesn't like the domain.

I am descended from William Alexander Oakman, who I believe was a younger brother of John Wesley Oakman's and moved to Missouri with him before the Civil War. It appears that William's son, Joseph, however, returned to IL when my Grandfather Roy Oakman was a child. My grandparents were married in the Blandinsville/LaHarpe area and my dad (Ronald Max) was born in LaHarpe.

That's the sketch of what I know. Had also heard from Ruby Oakman that the line goes back to Maine in the c. 1640s, and that we're all descended from a woman who moved to Illinois with her kids after her husband divorced/left her in PA.

Just just starting to track this there a software package you find particularly helpful for this?

I'm an MD in Michigan. The rest of my dad's family is in SE IA and Minnesota. Grandpa Roy and Grandma Peggy Oakman are still alive and active at 91 and 89, respectively, in Fairfield IA.
