My great grandfather was Robert Gideon O'Berry, son of Wilson C. O'Berry and Elizabeth James who died between l850 and l860. Wilson C. died while serving in Symond's Battalion, Confederate Army, and is buried in Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina. Wilson's
parents were Solomon O'Berry and his wife Mary Ellen Jackson O'Berry originally from McIntosh, County, Georgia.
James O'Berry of North Carolina received a land grant in Georgia in l763?. You can get a copy of the grant as they are in the Archives in Atlanta-a huge document. Are we related to James. I believe so. Why? North Carolina records indicate that one Henry O'Berry received a land grant in North Carolina in l750. The property described in the North Carolina grant was conveyed in a deed by the McIntosh County the North Carolina property unless they were related. James OBerry, who received the grant in the name of King George from Gov. James Wright, was from North Carolina.
John OBerye and Rose Stretchy received property in Martins Hunddred near Williamsburg, Virginia in what is now Fort Eustis, Virginia in l636. OBerrys continue to live in Suffolk, Virginia which now includes all of old Nansemond County, Virginia. According to North Carolina records Henry O'Berry of Virginia recieved his grant in l750 in either Bertie or Anson County and,if my reading serves me correctly, that North Carolina county in the l700s extended from the Va border (Nansemond County) to mid-North Carolina. O'Berrys are prominent in North Carolina, an O'Berry Street exists in Raleigh and a prominent hospital, the OBerry Center, is located in Goldsboro. The problem is tying Solomon to James with some sort of documentation. But the fact is there is a thread of migration which ties the family together, especially when one notes the transfer of the property in North Carolina in a Georgia deed filed in what remains of the old records in McIntosh County, Georgia. You and I are also cousins.
My dad was Robert Charles O'Berry (1906-1965. My grandfather was Robert David O'Berry (l874-1955), My great grandfather was Robert Gideon O'Berry (1847-1916) and his
father was Wilson C. O'Berry. There are O'Berry's here in Maryland with ties to the Virginia O'Berrys and in looking at records I find several O'Berry families who claim they are from Hanover in Germany. I would be interested in any old photographs of the family as all of our old family photos were destroyed in a fire at my grandparent's home in 1929. You should contact Danny O'Berry who is writing a history of our family. If I can be of help, please feel free to email me.
Lyn
