Hi Debbie,
Looking over what the descendant's sent me, the David Ochiltree's ancestry is from their family data.I believethere might have been two David's in NC.One who perhaps (without proof) was brother or son of Duncan Ochiltree - then we have David who arrived in 1773 NC Ship records (could have been the same as the one in the earlier record and kinship with Duncan, don't have proof) - Then we have David Ochiltree, son of Hugh Ochiltree of whom they say was born 1742c and - married Nancy McCraney and was suppose to be the ancestor of Thomas Peck Ochiltree, William Beck Ochiltree and etc. This coming from an aunt and her niece from their family papers.
From "Colonial Records of NC", Col. Wm L. Saunders - It is apparent from these records and from other printed histories of Mecklenburg Co, NC - and Fayetteville NC - that there were two men who were living in NC before the ARW named Duncan, sometimes called DUN and a David Ochiltree, he is shown in various NC early records as the one who was overseer...I recall only a few mentions of him in earlier printed records.
As far as the SHAW's in this part of NC - I have alot of data on them and haven't studied it in awhile, but according to some info, they were part of the transportion of a Campbell of whom the Shaws were related either in NC or Scotland or both - The Campbell in question was said to be the son of a Land Baron in Scotland and he in turn was titled himself.Shaw was his guardian I had read.Have you read anything about these issues? When the ARW started, this branch of Campbell lost their lands and there were disputes according to the Bridges data and it also gave reference to Scotland and the Campbell heirs there. Several Campbells in fact lost their land in NC due to Tory leanings...the Campbells were connected to Shaw and some of the other prominent families in this Scottish colony of NC.
Do I say that David's grandfather was David Stewart Ochiltree? No, I don't, but two of his descendants did. This is what they claim. There was no mention of Hugh's name being Malcolm Hugh.Perhaps he didn't use both names...perhaps only in Scotland? All I know is of HUGH Ochiltree (ARW Vet) and his son was David Ochiltree who left descendants. They were prominent in Fayetteville NC.
I also saw on the original microfilm the census for FLORA Ochiltree, wife of Duncan.Printed census has her as having one slave and no other person's in her HH.Duncan died or left America before 1790.We do need to see his estate papers of which were listed on the Myra Bridges data and her book - (Scattered Seed) -also other Ochiltree's.
