We were all new to this once. Just start with what you know. Search the Social Security Index at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/fto_ssdisearch.html?Welcome=1049836053 and the California Death Records Index at http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi.

There'a a Clifford A. O'Day born in Illinois 1916, died Corona, CA 1996, who seems to fit your grandfather's profile. To check to all out and for good documentation you'll need to order a birth certificate from Illinois and get a full death record from California.

Then just take it backward from 1916, a generation at a time.
