The French connection is true. I have some silver teaspoons which are part of a cuttlery set which has been divided up and passed down through the family.. The Frenchman is my grandmother's grandfather. She knew French and taught my mother how to pronounce the French words. He escaped during the French revolution and fled to England. He had a hyphenated name (Initials on the spoon S.I. and below that was added an O. for Oders). He went to Craven where he married and took the name of his wife. His grandson was William Others who was a stonemason with a quarry. He built a viaduct in Colne. I have a drawing of this.
I heard a talk on the radio during the 200 year celebration of Bastille day where they mentioned a cariacaturist who had drawn cariacatures of the big 3 so was not popular and had to flee to England He had a hyphenated name - initials S.I. I have tried to follow this up but with no success.
